What autonomous actually buys you on a night shift
Every account I have put a robot on has the same conversation before purchase: the client wants fewer visible workers after 9pm, and the ownership wants the machine paying for itself inside 24 to 30 months. Nilfisk and Tennant are the two names that come up first for mid-size floor accounts in the 40,000 to 120,000 sq ft range, and their approach to autonomy is different enough that picking wrong costs you a full budget cycle.
Nilfisk's entry here is the Liberty SC50, built on the same chassis Advance sells under its own brand. It uses a 20 in scrub path, a 15 gal solution tank paired with a 14 gal recovery tank, and a 24V, 255 Ah AGM battery bank rated for up to 6 hours of runtime per charge, according to Nilfisk's own product page. Manufacturer literature claims a theoretical productivity ceiling around 20,400 sq ft per hour, though several dealer listings quote a more field-realistic 11,000 sq ft per hour once you factor in mapping runs and obstacle navigation.
Tennant's answer is the X4 ROVR, which runs on BrainOS, the navigation platform built by Brain Corp, the same company behind autonomous floor equipment sold under several other brands. Tennant has publicly disclosed a $32 million investment tied to that partnership. The X4 ROVR carries a smaller 10 gal solution and 10 gal recovery tank, a 20 in dual-disk scrub path, and a 90 Ah lithium-ion pack running at 25.6V, good for roughly 2.5 hours of autonomous runtime and up to 20,000 sq ft per solution tank fill, per Tennant's published spec sheet.

The battery chemistry split matters more than most buyers expect. AGM lead-acid, what Nilfisk uses, is heavier and needs a longer overnight charge window, but it tolerates partial charging and heat poorly maintained charging rooms without much drama. Lithium-ion, Tennant's choice on the X4, charges faster and holds capacity longer over its life, but the 90 Ah pack is genuinely a smaller battery, which is why the runtime gap between these two machines is so wide, 6 hours versus 2.5, even though the scrub paths are nearly identical.
Coverage accuracy is the number that actually predicts labor savings
Nilfisk publishes a coverage accuracy figure worth paying attention to: its autonomous modes claim 98 to 99.5 percent floor coverage per pass, compared with roughly 85 percent typical for a human operator working the same route without a coverage-mapping tool. That gap compounds. On a 60,000 sq ft warehouse floor cleaned five nights a week, an 85 percent coverage rate means roughly 9,000 sq ft gets missed or double-passed every night, which shows up eventually as a client complaint about "streaky" corners near racking.
Tennant does not publish an equivalent coverage percentage in its public spec sheet, but BrainOS's Teach & Repeat mode is built around the same idea: an operator drives the route once, the machine memorizes it, and every subsequent run follows the identical path rather than a human's varying attention span. In practice, both platforms solve the same operator-fatigue problem from different software architectures.
Certification is where Nilfisk has a real edge
The Liberty SC50 is, as of this writing, the only autonomous scrubber independently certified to CSA/ANSI C22.2 No. 336-17, the safety standard covering autonomous industrial vehicles. That certification matters most in union facilities, hospitals, and any account where the facility's own risk management team has to sign off on unattended robotics operating near staff. If your target accounts include hospital systems or large distribution centers with a safety committee review step, that paperwork alone can shorten a sales cycle by weeks.
What the roadmap tells you about support life
Tennant and Brain Corp announced BrainOS Clean 2.0 with a feature called SelfPath, rolling out through spring 2026, aimed at improving adaptive obstacle handling without requiring a full re-teach of the route. That is a meaningful signal: Tennant is treating the software layer as a subscription-style product that improves after purchase, similar to how a car manufacturer pushes firmware updates. Ask your Tennant rep directly whether the X6 ROVR (the next model up in the family) supersedes the X4 before you commit capital, since dealers sometimes discount outgoing models heavily in the months before a refresh.
Nilfisk's update cadence is slower and tied more closely to hardware revisions than software pushes. That is not necessarily worse, since some ownership groups prefer a machine that does the same thing reliably for ten years over one that changes behavior every firmware cycle, but it does mean you should not expect the same kind of software-driven capability creep from the Liberty line.
Total cost of ownership over a 5-year hold
Purchase price is the smallest piece of the real cost. Figure the AGM battery bank in the SC50 for a replacement around year 3 to 4 of hard nightly use, running $1,800 to $2,600 depending on your distributor. The X4 ROVR's lithium pack should outlast that interval, but lithium replacement packs for commercial floor equipment commonly run $3,000 to $4,500 when they do need swapping, so the lifetime battery cost roughly washes out between the two platforms.
Pad and squeegee consumables run close to identical between the two machines since both use a 20 in class scrub deck. Budget $0.006 to $0.010 per sq ft cleaned for pads on a typical VCT or sealed concrete floor, per ISSA production benchmarks. The bigger cost differentiator is dealer network depth. Tennant's dealer and parts network is broader in most secondary and tertiary US metro markets; Nilfisk/Advance coverage is strong in major metros but thinner in smaller markets, which matters if a part fails on a Friday night shift and the nearest tech is two states away.
A punch list for the walk-through
- Confirm floor flatness and expansion joint spacing, since both machines lose coverage accuracy on floors with joints wider than about half an inch
- Ask for the actual as-tested coverage rate on a floor plan similar to yours, not the lab-condition number from the brochure
- Get the local dealer's average parts turnaround time in writing, not verbally
- Verify charging dock placement does not conflict with existing forklift traffic lanes
- Request a 30-day trial period with a buyback or return clause before signing a multi-unit order
For most 24/7 or lights-out warehouse and distribution accounts over 80,000 sq ft, the Nilfisk Liberty SC50's longer per-charge runtime and CSA/ANSI certification make the higher list price defensible. For retail or office accounts closer to 20,000 to 50,000 sq ft with a compressed overnight window, the Tennant X4 ROVR's lower entry price and faster lithium recharge cycle usually pencils out better. Get both machines on your actual floor for a real trial before signing. Brochure coverage numbers and your floor's coverage numbers are rarely the same figure.
