Responding to Yelp Reviews: The Protocol That Protects Your Reputation
How you respond to Yelp reviews (especially negative ones) is visible to every future prospect who reads your profile. Your response strategy is as important as the review itself.
For positive reviews: Respond within 48 hours. Thank the reviewer by name (if visible). Acknowledge a specific detail they mentioned rather than using a generic template. Invite them to connect directly for any future needs.
"Thanks so much for the detailed review, [Name]. It means a lot to hear that the move-in clean exceeded your expectations. That building had some specific challenges and we're glad the team delivered. See you next time!"
For negative reviews: Never become defensive publicly. Acknowledge their experience, apologize without admitting specific liability, and offer to resolve offline:
"[Name], I'm sorry your experience didn't meet our standard. This doesn't reflect what we expect from our team, and I'd like to make it right. Please reach out directly at [phone/email] so I can understand what happened and address it personally. [Your name], Owner"
This response demonstrates professionalism to everyone reading it, including the original reviewer. In many cases, a well-handled response causes the reviewer to update their rating after a positive resolution.
Yelp Advertising: When It Makes Sense
Yelp's advertising product (cost-per-click, starting at $150–$400/month minimum) makes sense for residential cleaning operators in markets where Yelp has strong residential search traffic. In these markets (primarily major coastal cities) Yelp generates high-intent leads from people actively searching for cleaners.
For commercial cleaning, Yelp's value is primarily reputation management (the profile exists and is positive) rather than paid lead generation. Invest Yelp advertising budget in Google LSA or Facebook first unless Yelp is demonstrably generating residential leads in your specific market.
